Since its version 1 (maybe 2) at this point, those of us who depended on being able to directly control our systems in this manner get left out in the cold for a while as the new system catches up to our needs (trust me, as users of this functionality, we are very much in the computing minority), and now, with Windows v1709, the system has been fully deprecated and is no longer available through the usual channels in the OS UI. Unfortunately, as with most progress in the IT space, this is basically v1 of the paradigm (since Windows 8) which is to supplant the mature, long-used (since the 90's) win32 (or desktop) model. The primary culprit here is Universal Windows Apps (also known as Windows Store Apps) which represent the future of Windows programming. Ultimately, these changes are coming about from a number of ways that applications work and are managed under the hood. The idea, they have stated, is to only allow the end-user the ability to manage these associations. The purpose/reason for doing so involves security vulnerabilities associated with allowing programs and their installers to programmatically, and without user intervention or knowledge, make changes to these associations via their registry entries (which the UI in the Control Panel manipulates). The issue behind all this missing functionality it that, MS, in their infinite wisdom, since Windows 8, have implemented an entirely new sub-system for managing file and protocol associations. Meanwhile, I'm interested if anybody here knows how in the world MPC-BE is able to open that old Control Panel - Set Default Programs window so I can make a shortcut or something similar to have at hand when needed? It's totally dumb and time consuming to have to use such workarounds to get basic Windows functionalities that worked fine before, and I hope Microsoft will address this in the near future. After that a "new" (actually old) window appears ( Set Default Programs) where you can set the defaults as in previous versions of Windows.

We deal with callouts because the printer has run out of paper, the boss has forgotten their laptop power adapter, or something is urgent because they could have done the thing at 9am and realised something was broken, but they did it at 4pm with a 5pm cutoff because they didn't plan well - sometimes you just have to take it on the chin and get it done.įYI, my computer is v1803 but the affected user has a brand new laptop, latest updates, so I wouldn't be surprised that its v1809.Same here, the new version 1709 completely removed the functionality to set all defaults for a program with one click.Īs the OP wrote, when you click on " Set your default programs" or " Associate a file type or protocol with a program" in Control Panel, it leads you to the new Windows 10 "settings app" UI instead where you can't do much to shorten the files association procedure.Ĭurrently, as a workaround (credit goes to my friend who found it), the only way I can access the old " Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs" is by using the file association menu of Media Player Classic BE, by going to OPTIONS -> FORMATS, then selecting either VIDEO, AUDIO or ALL associations and then clicking APPLY. You sometimes have to just ignore the comments that assume what you haven't done rather than ask what you have done. For the majority, this ain't our first rodeo. Take a skim through the comments, if there aren't too many, to make sure your "Did you try turning it off and on again?" advice hasn't already been given. Many, MANY times already. TLDR for everyone? This isn't FixYa or Tom's Hardware Forums.
